Eric J. Drummond

Eric began drawing at a very early age. Born to parents from Madeira, Portugal and Le Marche, Italy; he was constantly inspired by western art specifically from the Italian Renaissance. Compelled to put thoughts on paper, and curious about people, he spent his time as a child drawing and sketching religious scenes, superheroes and wildlife.

He was introduced to Italian Renaissance painters by his grandfather and has since copied and researched their methods, striving to understand the way they saw nature and humanity. After graduating highschool, he studied art history at the university of Guelph, specializing in the Italian and Dutch art of the 15th and 16th Century and becoming quite fond of Celtic Illuminated manuscripts.

After studying Art History at the University of Guelph, he traveled to Florence, Italy to study painting and drawing for three years at the Florence Academy of Art. There he learned to draw and paint the figure from life, compose portraits and still lifes, using the traditional methods and practices developed by the old masters from which he was so inspired by as a child. Eric graduated with top honors and decided to bring this tradition and culture to Canada. He opened his studio through The Art Projects art residency program in London, Ontario, where he now works and teaches.

Some of the artists most influential to Eric over the years include Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Pontormo, Cellini, Bernini, Rembrandt, Ribera, Ramon Casas, Velazquez, Carpeaux, Repin, Solomon J Solomon, John Singer Sargent, Bonnat and Bronzino. Not only fascinated by painting and drawing methods of the old masters, but he also studied sculptures and anatomy to further understand form and movement in his figures. Eric believes that the research and poetry found in your subjects is limitless, and it is the responsibility of the art to present his or her vision in the most beautiful manner possible, using the canons developed over hundreds and thousands of years. Art, theatre, dance and music are all interconnected disciplines that are birthed from our capacity to observe and describe our feelings. The same principles of composing a symphony are reflected in the composing of a painting, and they owe their origins to nature and therefore a divine source in which an artist must aspire to reach. It is not enough to describe what is Infront of us, but what the capacity of these things makes us feel and think. Art should make us feel and be thoughtful of these feelings.

Eric’s work has been awarded and featured by many international establishments including The Art Renewal Center, the Florence Academy of Art, Sotheby’s and the MEAM in Barcelona. He is an alumni of and has worked as an instructor of drawing in Italy and in Canada, and has exhibited internationally in Italy, Spain, The United States and Canada.
